Joni was the Community Research Assistant for BSSN starting in January 2011 and has continued through CONAS as well as other projects administered by Aleut International Association. She is a life long Gambell resident with three grown children and four grandchildren.

Arlene Gundersen

Arlene has been the steering committee member since the beginning of the pilot phase of BSSN. She is the former board president of Aleut International Association and has served on numerous other boards within the Aleutian region.

Delbert has been on the steering committee since 2014 and is the current president of the Native Village of Savoonga.
Verna Immingan
Community Research Assistant
Verna has been the community research assistant since September 2012 when Savoonga was added to the Bering Sea Sub-Network. She was born and raised in Savoonga, Alaska where she is currently raising her son. She spends her time picking lots of berries and greens, digging for ivory, and gathering sea peaches in the fall. She sometimes volunteers for the City of Savoonga, Head Start Preschool and the New Year’s Games.

Laresa Syverson
Community Research Assistant
Laresa Syverson was raised in Unalaska and the International Port of Dutch Harbor and continues to live there today. Laresa is passionate about Unangan language revitalization and is actively involved with the Tribe of St. Paul and APIA to learn as much as she can. Laresa is also passionate about gathering and expressing traditional knowledge through Art, Story-telling, and Environmental Monitoring Programs such as the Aleut International Association (AIA) data collection program. Laresa advocates that Unangan people be involved in the process of gathering environmental data and traditional knowledge because it builds professional skills and provides an innovative way to learn about the food we receive from our environment and what changes or interactions are taking place. Laresa also learns traditional medicines and chocolate confection from her Mother and is a licensed Massage Therapy Practitioner. She aims to love the work she does and inspire others to love the work they do. Laresa has her Associates degree in Fine Art from IAIA (NM) and recently completed their Museum Studies Certificate program (Fall 2018).
